Questions

Hi Adil. I am from India. I want to pursue MSc in molecular biotechnology...I wanted to know about the placements after the MSc in molecular biotechnology. Do we get placed by the university? Or do we have to find a job?

Hello, thank you very much for your question and apologies in the delay getting back to you. My name is Emma from the Postgraduate Recruitment team, and I am replying on behalf of the mentor as they have not yet answered it.

Placements are not a part of the MSc Molecular Biotechnology, unfortunately. While the university does not put you in placements, we offer help to assist you finding jobs after you graduate, through our Careers Network. They can help with CV writing, interview prep and 1-2-1 meetings to discuss career options, as well as running careers fairs throughout the year on campus with employers from all over the UK.

Hi Adil, I hope you are well and thanks for being on this platform to answer our questions. If I would graduated with a good PhD from the University of Birmingham, would I be guaranteed a lecturer position in biology at universities and colleges if I apply to them?

Hello, thank you very much for your question and apologies in the delay getting back to you. My name is Emma from the Postgraduate Recruitment team, and I am replying on behalf of the mentor as they have not yet answered it.

While getting a PhD is a fantastic thing, unfortunately it does not guarantee you a position as a lecturer! Like other jobs, you will still have to apply for the position and go through the interview process etc. Teaching positions are competitive, many PhD students like the idea of academia as a career, but getting a good PhD from a respected university like Birmingham will help.

Hi, I am from Italy. I've a Master's degree in Biology (cv Nutritional Biology), but I am interested also to jump in new experience with a PhD in Bioscience. I would interested to know if there is in your department some position opened, also a training. Do not hesitate to ask for more information. Thanks in advance for your time.

Hello, thank you very much for your question. My name is Emma from the Postgraduate Recruitment team, and I am replying on behalf of the mentor as they have not yet answered it.

For advertised PhD courses in Biosciences, have a look at our FindAPhD database: https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/findaphd.aspx
Please note that this is updated regularly so check back to see whether there are any new positions.

I hope this helps,

Hello, I'm interested in a Masters degree in the field of Genetics or Molecular Biology. However, my undergraduate degree in Biology includes an integrated masters (300 ECTS). Do you think that there's no reason for me to have another master degree and I have better look for a PhD program? Thank you

Hello, thank you very much for your question. My name is Emma from the Postgraduate Recruitment team, and I am replying on behalf of the mentor as they have not yet answered it.

Unfortunately I’m not sure whether your integrated masters would count towards an application to a PhD, but as the mentor has not replied to you, I would advise that you make an enquiry to the relevant team. At the bottom of the course page (https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/research/bio/biosciences.aspx) there is a ‘Make an enquiry’ button. Submitting a question there will send it to someone on the team, who will hopefully be able to help!

Best wishes,
Emma

Dear Adil I am interested in studying the MRes molecular mechanistic toxicology at the university of Birmingham in order to investigate the mechanism of neurotoxicity. My academic qualifications are MBBS, MSc clinical neuropsychiatry from the university of Birmingham. My inquiry is that: Do I have to use animal models in my research ? If yes, can you please advise me on which branch of toxicology that do NOT require the use of animal models in its research? I really do not want to harm or cause pain to animals. Many Thanks Kind Regards

Hi, This is Mani Madhukar, from India. I pursued my B.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences and I'm planning to study masters in Food Sciences and plant sciences. But, unfortunately Birmingham University doesn't have any related programs. So, I'm thinking to go for Food Security Course. So, could you please spare a moment and let me know is it a right choice and the job opportunities after completing my masters.

Hi,

Sorry our mentor has not yet replied to you. We do not offer a specific course in Food Security but, as shown here, several staff are actively involved in the area: https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/food-security/education/index.aspx

How will your degree prepare you for what you want to do afterwards?

First of all, I will gain necessary scientific knowledge related to the area of my research after my PhD. I will gain supervisory experience as well as develop report-writing skills and will be confident to present my research work as oral or poster presentations. I will have acquired skills such as effective communication, leadership, analytical, problem solving and networking skills by the time I finish my PhD. In addition, I aim to publish three research articles in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. I will also make useful contacts in the scientific community in the UK in the next two years.

Have you joined any clubs or societies, gone on any research trips or done any volunteering?

As a part of my research training, I have registered myself with the Biochemical Society, British Society for Proteome Research, British Society for Cell Biology and American Society for Cancer Research. I have attended many conferences on different topics in Cambridge, London and here at the University of Birmingham. I have not attended any research trips this year but I am registered to attend one next year. I have volunteered at a “Meet the Scientists” event at the Think-tank Museum in Birmingham.

What has been the highlight of your time at Birmingham?

Overall, I have really enjoyed staying at Birmingham and working at the University of Birmingham. However, if I have to choose the best moment, I would choose the time when I was told by my supervisor that the School of Biosciences appointed me to be a postgraduate mentor for the School of Biosciences. I also enjoy walking around the canals in Birmingham and sight seeing in Birmingham as well as outside. Currently I am living in the city centre where I can meet people from different cultures, countries and ethnicities. I enjoy working at the University since I can not only work on research projects that I like but I can also meet new people and make more friends.

Why did you choose the University of Birmingham?

The School of Biosciences is rated one of the top Biology departments in the UK. According to the QS World University Rankings, University of Birmingham is one of the most prestigious universities ranking 10th nationally and 64th internationally in recognition of the high quality of teaching and research activities of the University. Dr Hotchin is an expert on cell adhesion and signaling with a particular interest in Rho family GTPases. He is a member of a large and active grouping of internationally recognized molecular cell biologists in the School of Biosciences. He is ideally placed to supervise my project in addition to Professor John Heath, Dr Michael Tomlinson and Dr Debbie Cunningham.

What was your motivation for undertaking postgraduate study?

When I was registered during my undergraduate and graduate courses, I was fascinated how scientists perform research, validate research and publish it so that students and other researchers can learn from it. At that time, I decided that I would like to join a research-based degree where I am also heavily involved in research and contribute something to betterment of humankind. Therefore, I joined a research program that is at the forefront of basic cancer research. The aim of my project is to understand the mechanisms whereby PDGF receptor activity is controlled in normal cells, so that we can then understand why it is important in cancer. The eventual aim would be to develop novel cancer drugs that target PDGF receptors. To achieve this, I’m using a variety of cutting-edge molecular, biochemical- and cell biological techniques as well as a biophysical technique known as mass spectrometry.

I want to have my PhD study in Birmingham. I am an Ethiopian. I am University lecturer of Clinical Chemistry. How can I get there? Any scholarship? please let me hear from you?

Hi, i am student from Pakistan and interested to join upcoming postgraduate course(biotechnology). I search on some sites and i have seen two options for this course;taught and research based.I need little bit of your guideline in this matter, which is the best and also does taught course includes thesis research or not. And after doing my postgraduate with taught course can i apply for PHD in any university. Well i done BS(bachelor) that include thesis as well.

Hello,

Thanks for your question and being interested in study at the University of Birmngham.

There are two options here : MSc which is a taught master degree with a project you have to do at the end of the course.

Option 2: MRes which is a combined taught and formal thesis master degree.

Both are masters it’s your preference which one is suitable for you and you can do a PhD no problem with them at all. Postgraduate courses in School of Biosciences at the University of Birmngham is one of the best school in the UK and overseas as well.

Thanks for your enquiry and let me know if you need further information.
