Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I chose to study at the University of Birmingham as it’s a highly respected institution with a strong reputation for computer science. The MSc in Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning is also a well-established course taught by academics actively engaged in research, that provides students with a solid foundation in theory and in practical skills sought by employers. AI and ML are rapidly expanding fields which are being applied to a wide range of industries from healthcare to finance and entertainment and there is a growing demand for skilled professionals.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

The course covers a wide range of topics including neural networks, deep learning, natural language processing, and computer vision. The course is taught by experts in the field of AI and machine learning and provides students with a high level of expertise and knowledge. It’s a supportive and collaborative learning environment, with opportunities for networking and engagement with industry professionals. The course also allows students to customize their learning experience by choosing from a range of optional modules, which align with their career aspirations.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

The best thing about the University of Birmingham is the vibrant and diverse community on campus; the University also has a rich history and culture and a strong commitment to providing students with an exceptional educational and research environment. The campus is beautiful and very green with excellent transport links to the city centre and the surrounding areas. The city of Birmingham is also great as a thriving hub for culture, entertainment, and innovation. Students also have a lot of opportunities for professional development including career guidance and support for entrepreneurial endeavours.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

I’ve found my passion here at the University and have become hardworking (and I wasn’t before!). There are so many talented, hardworking, and ambitious people around me here and this made me realise the worth of committing to something and seeing it through. Overall, the highlight of my time at the University has been the opportunity to learn, grow and develop my skills and knowledge in an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

For anyone thinking about studying this course, I would say that having a strong foundation in mathematics, computer science and programming is important. It’s also important to have a keen interest in how AI and ML can be applied to a wide range of fields including healthcare, finance, and transportation. It’s essential to be proactive in seeking out practical experience in the form of internships and work placements, as well as networking opportunities both on and off campus as this will all help you stand out in the job market. Lastly, I would advise prospective students to talk to current or former students to gain an insight into their experiences.

Is there anything extra students thinking about studying on the course should know?

The course supports students to find internships and practical experience, and the School regularly hosts industry guest speakers which provides valuable networking opportunities. The University also has a strong research culture and students can get involved in cutting-edge research projects in AI and ML which sets you up for gaining a job afterwards.
