Questions

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

I am currently pursuing an MSc in Financial Technology at the University of Birmingham. I previously completed a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science, and I was eager to apply my knowledge to a field that plays a crucial role in modern society- finance and technological innovation. My goal was to deepen my expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning algorithms, and data science while understanding how these technologies intersect with financial systems.

How has your funding helped you?

Receiving a scholarship has been invaluable, particularly as someone from a low-income background and the first in my family to pursue higher education. The financial burden of university extends far beyond tuition fees- it includes travel expenses (which for me involves daily use of trains, buses, and taxis), the cost of technological equipment such as a laptop and software, textbooks, and other essential resources. As a woman, from a Pakistani heritage, and a misrepresented Muslim background, pursuing a master’s degree in a field that has historically lacked diversity is especially meaningful. It allows me to be represented in spaces where voices like mine are often underrepresented and to contribute to making the industry more inclusive.

What are the best things about your course?

This programme offers a well-balanced combination of theoretical and practical learning. The first semester, which is heavily theory-based, provided me with a solid foundation in financial concepts- an area I had no prior experience in before starting this course. The second semester is much more hands-on and engaging, allowing me to apply my learning in real-world contexts. I have had the opportunity to program in Python and R (developing models for regression, natural language processing, and artificial neural networks), attend guest lectures from industry professionals at renowned companies such as Google and EY, and participate in hackathons and events organized by our module leaders in collaboration with TechSkills UK- who have accredited this course with a ‘Gold’ standard! One particularly exciting experience was taking part in a pilot trial for Frii World, a company that aims to integrate the XRP Ledger (XRPL) into retail transactions while offering consumers incentives such as coupons and discounts.

Beyond academics, this course has provided me with a wealth of opportunities to develop my skills in a way that is directly applicable to my future career. The combination of my background in technology and my growing expertise in FinTech has given me confidence in my ability to pursue roles within this rapidly evolving industry. I can pursue roles in data analytics, risk management, and algorithmic trading, where predictive modelling and automation are transforming financial decision-making. Alternatively, my experience with blockchain technology positions me well for roles in decentralized finance (DeFi) and cryptocurrency development, where innovation is reshaping global transactions. Additionally, my programming skills and understanding of financial systems make me a strong candidate for FinTech software engineering, where I can develop secure, scalable applications for digital banking, payments, and fraud prevention. With the industry’s growing emphasis on cybersecurity, financial inclusion, and regulatory technology (RegTech), my ability to bridge technology and finance allows me to adapt to emerging industry needs and contribute to shaping the future of financial services.

What was your motivation to study a Masters degree?

Pursuing a Masters degree was a significant decision for me, especially as a full-time carer. After taking a year out of education following my undergraduate degree, I realised just how much I valued learning and how passionate I was about continuing my studies in this field. Without this scholarship, I simply would not have been able to afford this opportunity, and my future career prospects would have been significantly limited.

This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and I am incredibly grateful for the support that has enabled me to take this important step in my academic and professional life.
