What has it been like studying as a distance learning student?
Our course is taught on a single day per month on the Birmingham campus. Living some distance away, I find the online resources very useful.

The Faculty has a superb reputation, and the focus on regional history is second to none. There are exciting links fostered by the teaching staff with wonderful resources, local museums and libraries. The staff have in-depth and varied expertise, and their lively support makes this course hugely enjoyable. Tracing the history of the West Midlands from the days of the Anglo-Saxons to (so far) the early days of the Industrial Revolution continues to be fascinating, and of course there is no better place to study this than the University that is in the heart of the region.
I have very much enjoyed the two field trips to local sites of historical interest and relevance. I also love the vast range of resources available to students at Birmingham, and find myself continually being distracted by peripheral subjects in my research. The course has also ensured I become familiar with original (eg 17th century) archives at my local county archive centre at the public library. This has been really exciting!
