I completed my bachelors degree in India with 8.84 CGPA. I am confused between the course selection for the Masters I.e. Structural Engineering vs. Construction Engineering and Management. The Structural Engineering programme is more focused, designed for civil engineering or related graduates looking to specialise as structural engineers.

I have gone on a number of research trips and site visits during my undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Why did you choose the University of Birmingham?

I chose the University of Birmingham because of the reputation of the Department of Civil Engineering and the high quality of the course, teaching, the excellent student experience and facilities.

What was your motivation for undertaking postgraduate study?

My research addresses management in the construction industry. The course offers so much in terms of developing my construction management skills with the help of supervisors. The research project links to our practice and the supervisors provide us with invaluable help, feedback and advice.

How will your degree prepare you for what you want to do afterwards?

A doctorate research degree opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Completing a PhD Course gives you the ability to use your knowledge and research skills in your future career and life.

What, for you, are the best things about the course?

I enjoy site visits, it is really helpful to experience being on site of a construction project and observe development of construction stages. I also made some of my good friends during my undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

As I qualify for structural, geo-technical, geo-technical with management, civil and civil engineering with management, please could you suggest to me which course among all these is the most futuristic? It also depends on whether you enjoy laboratory work or design the most. The University has a great reputation and facilities in both Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering.

Dear Mahsa, I hope you are well. I need some suggestions and help as my son, a BTech (civil engineer) from a pioneering Indian university-(Manipal) has work experiences of two and half years as a site Engineer for a prestigious infra structure project in Bahrain. He wanted to join from this September as a full time Masters student in Civil Engineering. Please could you help suggest what is the best applicable course for him at Birmingham University? 1.MSc in Construction Management or 2. MSc in Civil Engineering and Management. Can the students get a job in the UK? And what is life on campus like for Muslim students and what about food? Awaiting for your reply.
