Questions

Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I have some acquaintances in Birmingham, so that helped me to make my mind up about studying at the University. The University is also well ranked, especially for the employability of its Engineering graduates. Lastly, the student body here is very diverse; I have really enjoyed learning more about other cultures and different approaches to problem-solving here.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

What really stood out to me about the MSc Civil Engineering course at Birmingham is the fact that it encompasses plenty of general topics within the subject which prepares students for the graduate job market and the range of careers available to them. I also love the fact that the lectures are recorded for students to watch in their own time.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

The best thing about studying here is the recorded lectures. It’s particularly helpful to be able to watch the calculation lectures again, as often I think I’ve understood a concept and it’s only when I try to work on it at home that I realise it’s not as simple as I first thought, so its useful to re-watch a lecture to really get to grips with new ideas.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

As someone who studied a bachelor’s degree in Brazil before coming to the UK, I have come to realise that there are some differences in the careers available in each country. Therefore, I have made some adjustments to my approach to job hunting with the help of the University’s Career Network which has lots of resources aimed at helping students to develop themselves in preparation for a career.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

I would advise students thinking about studying the Civil Engineering MSc to come to an Open Day as you’ll be able to talk to current students and staff. Bear in mind that there are no stupid questions- they’ll always be happy to clarify things for you and they’ll also be able to give you an idea of how things work here as well as advice on your career options.
