What has been your biggest achievement during your course so far?

One of the pivotal achievements so far, has been the significant upscaling of my confidence, huge thanks to the welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere fostered by our lecturers. Their friendly and approachable demeanor creates a safe space where I feel comfortable expressing myself freely. This nurturing environment empowers me to share my ideas, ask questions, and engage in discussions without fear of being reprimanded.
Another substantial accomplishment has been learning risk assessments for a spectrum of occupational diseases. Delving into the intricacies of identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks associated with range of occupational hazards has not only broadened my knowledge base but has also equipped me with skills crucial for ensuring a safer work environment across industries.
The privilege of serving as a Postgraduate Student Ambassador and Student Representative is an achievement I cherish. These roles have provided me with invaluable opportunities to connect with peers, faculty, and professionals, fostering a platform for collaborative initiatives and discussions. Serving as a representative voice for fellow students has been immensely fulfilling, enabling me to advocate for their needs and contribute to enhancing the overall student experience.

What are the best things about your course?

My course, MSc Health, Safety, and Environment Management, offer a comprehensive exploration of topics ranging from occupational health and safety to the intricate dynamics of the interaction between man and the environment. The unwavering support and welcoming nature of the tutors stand out as one of the course’s highlights, creating an environment where I feel comfortable expressing my thoughts during sessions. The provision of regular breaks for stretching and a cup of coffee enhances our attention spans and allows for refreshing interludes between sessions. Additionally, the mutual respect and friendship among my cohorts has proven invaluable, facilitating my integration into the new learning environment, shaping my overall experience, and making it easier for me to articulate and express myself.

How has your funding helped you?

Being a fully sponsored scholar of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund has been instrumental in alleviating financial burdens associated with my postgraduate studies. Beyond covering tuition fees, the funding supported my visa application, airfare, and provided monthly stipends, affording me the luxury of focusing wholeheartedly on my studies without the looming concern of offsetting bills. This financial support has been a cornerstone in ensuring my academic success and has allowed me to immerse myself fully in the learning experience.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

I am a dedicated Medical Doctor hailing from Nigeria, specializing in Ophthalmology at the esteemed National Hospital Abuja. My earliest memories are infused with the inspiring tales of trailblazing individuals who catalyzed societal transformations. These narratives ignited within me a fervent aspiration to drive meaningful change, not only for my nation but also for the broader global community. I firmly believe that true success is measured not solely by personal achievements but by the positive impact one creates in the lives of others. With this guiding philosophy, I embarked on the strenuous yet gratifying path of medicine, envisioning myself as a beacon of hope for those in need.
The pursuit of a Master’s degree in Health, Safety, and Environment Management was a natural progression fueled by my commitment to finding fulfillment in my profession. Recognizing the workplace as the arena where a significant portion of our lives unfolds, I observed a lack of attention to health and preventive measures among colleagues and workers, especially those in the oil and gas sector who handle hazardous substances. It became my duty as a medical practitioner to enhance my knowledge and enlighten others, fostering a healthier and happier workforce within a safer working environment.

What was your motivation for postgraduate study?

As a practicing Medical Doctor, I felt a compelling need to delve deeper into the intricacies of medicine and fortify my mindset in the field. My determination to pursue a postgraduate degree stemmed from a desire to cultivate a robust foundation in medicine, coupled with the invaluable opportunities presented by studying at a distinguished institution. The prospect of gaining international exposure through internships was particularly enticing, as it promised a profound understanding of diverse cultural practices—an essential facet for evolving into a successful and well-rounded doctor capable of excelling in a globalized and varied healthcare environment.
