Questions

Please tell us about your experience of using the University's services.

I have used various services offered by the university. Careers Network has helped me tailor my resume to fit the standards of the UK job market. Additionally, through the careers network, I have gained much knowledge that allows me to search for jobs quickly. I love the one-on-one service offered by the professional career advisors; during my meeting, I found various opportunities my course provided and how I could achieve them. The careers network also allowed me to find multiple ways to enhance my CV and gain more experience while I am studying here at the University of Birmingham.

I have also signed up for the Birmingham Law School Skills Academy classes. One of the courses I find particularly interesting and has significantly improved my skills as an academic would be the educational English class. I found various valuable tips and techniques to improve my written English.

What has been your biggest achievement during your course so far?

My most significant achievement so far is being a part of the Birmingham Law School’s ProBono department. I am currently selected as a volunteer for an environmental law group. We help the community by educating the general public about various environmental issues and laws in the UK and helping solve the problems. I am working closely with the Environmental Law Foundation, a national charity that provides free legal help and services to the general public.

What are the best things about your course?

The best thing I like about the courses offered by the University of Birmingham is the flexibility students have to mix and match their interests. For instance, I am a law student interested in the interplay of the Environment and technological laws. Thanks to the flexibility offered by the university, I can study my interests thoroughly and deeply without having to choose one over the other. I also love how well-defined all the modules are. You can get all the necessary information about the course before you apply, including the type of assessment or the marking criteria of each module, so that we can make an informed decision.

How has your funding helped you?

I received a Global Masters International Scholarship, which helped me immensely as an international student. Many expenses were incurred while starting my life here in the United Kingdom; thanks to the scholarship, I was able to spend it on my rent and reduce the overall education expenses I would incur, for which I am extremely grateful to the university.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

I am a third-generation lawyer who grew up wondering where my father and grandfather went daily in their suits when I woke up; this curiosity always fascinated me about law. Whenever I asked my father, he would smile and say they were superheroes in stylish suits who helped others by fighting their battles for them. This phrase has always been stuck in my mind and motivated me to work hard and chase my dream of being a superhero. I have always been obsessed with Technology and passionate about Privacy. As cliche as it sounds, I want to combine my passion, obsession and fascination; hence, I decided to take a break from my career as a lawyer and pursue a master’s to do just that.

What was your motivation for postgraduate study?

While working as a lawyer, I always felt suffocated seeing the degradation of the environment and the powerlessness of being unable to contribute to society to make it more sustainable, which made me decide to switch professions and enrol for an LLM from the University of Birmingham that allows me to learn more about sustainability, renewable energy sources, financing and assessment of energy projects, regulating technology, etc. As a lawyer, I wish to gain the relevant skillset and knowledge to impact society. I found the University of Birmingham LLM programme intriguing as it offered me the flexibility of choosing the areas I wish to specialise in, Technology and Environment.
