Why did you originally apply to do your chosen course at Birmingham?

I chose to apply for the MSc Financial Engineering course at Birmingham because I was interested in pursuing a career in quantitative finance, and the modules offered in this programme provide a strong foundation in Financial Mathematics and other key skills that are required in this field.

What do you think are the best points of your course?

One of the best aspects of my course is the way it provides a solid foundation in key Mathematical concepts and then encourages students to apply what they have learned to real-world problems. Additionally, the opportunity to improve my programming skills in Python, MATLAB, and R has been invaluable, as these are key tools used in the finance industry.

What’s the best thing about studying at the University of Birmingham?

One of the best things about studying at the University of Birmingham is the sense of community that exists here as well as the support on offer. I have found that my course-mates are as motivated and engaged as I am, and there are always opportunities to collaborate and work together to tackle complex problems.

What’s your highlight of your time at the University?

One of the highlights of my time at the University of Birmingham has been attending the Student Guild and society events on offer- from social events to sports and cultural activities like Latin Dance and Roller Skating, there is always something fun and engaging to do on campus.

What advice would you give to students thinking about studying on the course?

For anyone considering studying this course, my advice would be to come in with an open mind and a willingness to learn. The course is rigorous, but it is also incredibly rewarding, and the skills and knowledge you gain at Birmingham will serve you well throughout your career.

This course will equip you with the necessary skills to excel not just in the field of quantitative finance, but also in related areas like data science and other industries where a strong foundation in mathematics is valued.
