Questions

What degree did you study for your undergraduate degree? If this was different to History of Art, what made you choose to study a History of Art degree at Birmingham?

I studied Liberal Arts with a major in English and a minor in Film Studies. I chose to study History of Art here purely because the Barber Institute of Fine Arts is situated in the University itself and honestly I just wanted to always be surrounded by art. And it was a great decision because I got selected as a volunteer and that has helped me grow so much as someone who will work in the art sector in the near future.

What's your favourite work of art or exhibition at the Barber Institute of Fine Art?

A Mother and Child by the Sea by Johan Christian Dahl (1788-1857)

What is your favourite module so far?

An Unnatural History: Animals in Modern Western Art.

I took this module because I love all animals and I just wanted to know about the representation in art. But taking this module has opened my eyes to so much more; animal rights, strong contemporary art and artists, and how horribly animals have been treated historically for the pleasure of human beings. Now I am so much more critical of anything involving animals.

What's your career goal and how is Birmingham helping you reach this?

I do want to work in a gallery as well as continue being an artist. The University of Birmingham has helped me get a first-hand experience of what working in a gallery can look like because of my placement at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.

I volunteer at two different departments in the Barber for my placement; the marketing and Learning and Engagement teams.

For the marketing team, my work mainly revolves around social media marketing including photography, videography as well as writing captions for posts. Sometimes I also do research work. However, for the Learning and Engagement team, I help out during their events, be it Walk and Draw sessions, Life Drawing Sessions, or other events.

What do you think is unique about the University of Birmingham?

Having an art gallery and geology museum at the University itself.
