Tell us about yourself and your journey to studying a Skills Bootcamp.

My name is Mona (Memouna), and I’m a visual artist based in the Midlands. My practice delves into the universal displacement experience within a post-digital society. The subject matter of my work, coupled with the demands of my profession, motivated me to pursue learning front-end development. Prior to joining the bootcamp, my coding experience was limited to HTML, so grasping and implementing the taught material required significant time and effort both during and after the online sessions. The lessons were hands-on, necessitating problem-solving during class hours. Being a naturally slow learner, I found the breakout rooms with peers invaluable, as they provided collaborative learning opportunities. Each week, we were tasked with submitting a challenge, which greatly aided in solidifying our understanding of coding languages before progressing to more complex ones. Personally, I found the bootcamp’s pace to be quite rapid, especially given my other work and parental commitments. However, witnessing what I accomplished by the end was immensely rewarding. Our final project was a responsive time management app with a polished UI/UX, demonstrating potential for further development into an industry-standard product.

Therefore, I opted to explore courses that could assist me in overcoming my hesitancy to delve into app development from the ground up. Among the myriad of options available, the Skills Bootcamps offered by the University of Birmingham appeared to be the most suitable fit for my needs.
