Questions

Did you receive any funding when applying for postgraduate study? How has it helped?

Yes, I received a Birmingham scholarship and Student Finance England. My funding has been a huge help at the start of my postgraduate studies because it allows me to focus on my studies and work without the stress of having to save up for tuition on my own. Knowing that my tuition is covered means I can concentrate on managing my living expenses and putting my energy into my course, rather than worrying about how to make ends meet. It’s really taken a weight off my shoulders.

What do you hope to achieve during your postgraduate study at Birmingham?

During my postgraduate study at Birmingham, I aim to not only excel academically but also to make meaningful connections and fully embrace the university experience. I want to attend events, explore the city, and make the most of every opportunity. Beyond that, I’m focused on leaving a lasting impact in my field and within my department. I’ve also taken steps towards this by applying for university roles that will help me grow both personally and professionally.

What are you looking forward to most on your course?

I’m really looking forward to diving into the more theoretical aspects of my course and unpacking a lot of questions that have come up during my time working in HR. I’m excited to learn how managers process information and make decisions, and how to communicate effectively with colleagues at a deeper level. I’m especially keen to explore how to represent the concerns of the workforce and turn that into meaningful data that companies can use to create safer, more supportive environments for employees.

What have been your first impressions of Birmingham so far?

My first impressions of Birmingham have been nothing short of amazing! Every time I visit, whether it’s exploring the campus or just wandering around the city, I’m struck by how vibrant and full of opportunities it feels. Birmingham is one of those big cities that provides a platform for you to discover yourself and find new possibilities around every corner. It’s definitely a place where I can see myself growing, both personally and professionally.

What was your motivation for postgraduate study?

My main motivation for pursuing postgraduate study came from realizing that after three years in the working world, I’ve gained valuable insight but also a desire for more in-depth understanding. Having worked in various roles, I’ve experienced the practical side of things, but I now want to be better prepared for the more strategic and managerial aspects of my field.

I chose Human Resource Management because it’s where my passion lies. I’ve enjoyed working in entry-level roles, but now I’m eager to step into a space where I can see things from a manager’s perspective and focus more on the strategic, behind-the-scenes work that drives employee development and organizational success. This postgraduate study will help me build on what I’ve learned so far and take my knowledge to the next level.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

I’m Oluwatoyosi, and my journey to postgraduate study has been shaped by a mix of my work experiences and personal growth over the years. After completing my degree, I’ve had the chance to work in different roles, from job coaching at Coventry City Council to business support in adult social care at Warwickshire County Council. Each job has given me a new perspective on working with people, understanding systems, and improving services—especially in areas that directly affect people’s lives.

Alongside my career, I’ve faced some challenges, including managing my mental health, moving away from family, and balancing work and study. These experiences have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of finding balance. They’ve also driven me to want to contribute more in a professional sense, which is why I’ve chosen to pursue a postgraduate degree in HRM.

I’m passionate about people, wellness, and building supportive work environments, and I believe this course will help me develop the skills to do just that. I’m excited to bring my real-world experiences into my studies and see where this journey takes me next!
