Questions

Did you receive any funding when applying for postgraduate study? How did it help you?

Yes, I received the AI and Data Science Masters Scholarship. So far, my funding has helped with transport and living costs. In particular, I have been in desperate need of a new, suitable laptop for studying – so the scholarship has helped massively here.

What do you hope to achieve during your postgraduate study at Birmingham?

I hope to achieve fulfilment in what I do, not only in my studies, but also in my extra-curricular activities and the friendships I may make. I hope to broaden my perspective further and build up my confidence. Of course, I am here to study – but I wish to take advantage of the many opportunities on offer in order to develop as a person.

What are you looking forward to most on your course?

This may be the obvious answer, but I am most looking forward to my summer project. This is because there are so many possibilities to combine what I am learning in Computer Science with my expertise in other areas – especially as someone converting from another academic field. It is my chance to make an impact!

What have been your first impressions of Birmingham so far?

I am actually originally from the West Midlands, and I studied my undergraduate degree here. So, my first impression of Birmingham was many years ago! Birmingham has always been my second home!

What was your motivation for postgraduate study?

My postgraduate degree is in a very different field to my undergraduate. I am making my way from Law with Business Studies to Computer Science, so for me it is a career change! In short, my motivations are learning more about computing and switching into tech.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

I graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2023 with a degree in Law with Business Studies, with a year abroad in Canada. My interest in computing rapidly accelerated when I finished my final year of undergraduate, and I took various coding and IT courses in my spare time. I wanted to learn more, and pursue a career in tech. I already knew the university and researched the funding opportunities – particularly the AI and Data Science Masters Scholarship – and now I am here!

Between finishing my undergraduate and starting my postgraduate degree, I worked as Marketing Officer at Happy Autistic Lady. Accessibility is a cause which is close to my heart, and one of my life aims is to promote understanding and acceptance of autism and neurodivergence.
