What do you hope to achieve during your postgraduate study at Birmingham?

During my postgraduate study at Birmingham, I aim to gain a deep understanding of international relations, focusing on international security, migration, and diplomacy. I seek to enhance my analytical and research skills through rigorous coursework and engaging discussions. Additionally, I hope to connect with professionals through recruitment opportunities, which will be essential for building a network that supports my career aspirations in international relations and enables me to contribute effectively to global challenges.

What are you looking forward to most on your course?

I am most looking forward to engaging deeply with the diverse topics covered in the MA in International Relations, particularly in conflict resolution and global diplomacy. The opportunity to learn from experienced faculty and collaborate with fellow students from various backgrounds excites me. I’m also eager to explore recruitment opportunities available through the university, as they will be instrumental in preparing me for a meaningful career in international relations and expanding my professional network.

What have been your first impressions of Birmingham so far?

My first impressions of Birmingham have been overwhelmingly positive. The city is vibrant and diverse, blending rich history with modern innovation. I’ve enjoyed exploring its cultural offerings, from museums and galleries to the lively atmosphere of the markets. The welcoming community and the dynamic student environment make it easy to feel at home. Additionally, the city’s commitment to inclusivity and social engagement aligns perfectly with my values, enhancing my excitement about studying here and contributing to the local community.

What was your motivation for postgraduate study?

My motivation for pursuing postgraduate study stems from a desire to deepen my understanding of global affairs and contribute to solutions for pressing international challenges. During my undergraduate research on the Yemeni diaspora in Britain, I became passionate about migration, conflict, and diplomacy. I realized that to make a meaningful impact in these areas, I needed advanced theoretical and practical knowledge. The MA in International Relations at the University of Birmingham provides the ideal platform to develop this expertise and engage with global issues more critically and effectively.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

I’m Salah, pursuing an MA in International Relations at the University of Birmingham. My passion for global affairs began during my undergraduate studies, where I explored the Yemeni diaspora in Britain. This fueled my desire to understand migration and conflict through an academic lens.

My experiences as Secretary General of the Yemeni Students’ Union and in public relations roles have honed my leadership and communication skills. Now, as a Student Representative, I’m eager to deepen my knowledge and contribute to impactful discussions in international relations.
