Questions

What do you hope to achieve during your postgraduate study at Birmingham?

I want to develop my filmmaking technical skills and be able to build a portfolio with all the projects I work on. Also, I’m lucky that my class has students from a range of different backgrounds, and I expect that getting to know each other and learning from our different cultures, is going to enrich our experience as filmmakers.

What are you looking forward to most on your course?

One of the things I’m looking forward to the most is the practical training classes so we can start learning how to use the cameras (which I’ve heard are top-notch) and also get to work on projects with my classmates, so we can all get hands-on experience.

What have been your first impressions of Birmingham so far?

I’ve only been in the city for three weeks now, and I’ve mostly been on campus, but from what I’ve seen, it looks like a very peaceful city. I like how the streets look with the fallen leaves now that it’s autumn because it’s something I never get to see in my country. I can’t wait to keep exploring the city and all it has to offer.

What was your motivation for postgraduate study?

Besides wanting to get a formal education in filmmaking where I could learn both the theoretical and practical side of the craft, I also wanted to get the chance to study with people who have the same interest in film as me. This way we could collaborate on different projects and, since networking is key in an industry like this, it’s good to start building those relationships now.

Tell us about yourself and your journey to postgraduate study.

My name is Yuky and I’m an international student from Peru. I have a degree in Business Administration and have worked in project management for the last few years. However, I have always been passionate about film and TV and wanted to pursue it as a career. Back when I finished my undergraduate, I couldn’t do that for different reasons, but after working for many years, I realised I couldn’t keep putting my dream on hold and decided it was time to go for it. Considering my background, I concluded that pursuing a Masters degree would be the best way for me to learn both film/TV theory and practice, so I can be ready to start developing my own projects.
