LLM International Law and Security student Kunal writes about how his course and studying at the University of Birmingham is getting him ready for his future career.
When I started my LLM in International Law and Security at the University of Birmingham, I knew I was stepping into an exciting, challenging, and game-changing year. But looking back now, I realise it’s been much more than that.
This LLM has sharpened my legal mind, pushed my advocacy skills to the next level, and given me hands-on experience in international law. From mooting in front of real judges to diving deep into climate change and international human rights issues, every aspect of this journey is shaping me into the kind of lawyer who can make a real impact.
The Modules That Are Shaping My Future
One of the best things about my LLM is that I’ve been able to pick modules that truly align with my career goals.
First up, Public International Law—the heart of everything I want to do. This module has been a deep dive into state sovereignty, treaty law, and international dispute resolution. It’s reinforced my passion for working with international institutions like the UN, ICJ, and ECHR, and given me the tools to analyse complex global legal issues. Then there’s Renewable Energy and Climate Change Law—a subject that couldn’t be more relevant in today’s world. My dissertation focuses on the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its impact on decolonised nations—where trade, climate justice, and international law collide.
I’m also studying International Human Rights Law, which has expanded my understanding of the ECHR, ICCPR, and global human rights enforcement. And of course, there’s International Commercial Dispute Resolution—a must for anyone interested in arbitration and cross-border disputes. Learning about arbitral awards, jurisdictional challenges, and the New York Convention has been invaluable, especially as arbitration increasingly replaces traditional litigation in global commerce.

Levelling Up: Mooting, Skills and Career Growth
One of the highlights of my LLM? Leading the University of Birmingham team for the 13th Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition—an experience that has pushed me beyond my limits in the best possible way. Making it onto the team was just the first step. As Team Captain, I took on the challenge of strategizing, managing preparations, and ensuring we were ready to compete at an international level.
After months of intense research and practice, we qualified for the Regional Rounds in Porto, Portugal, competing against some of the best teams from the UK and Europe. Pleading and delivering rebuttals at the Palace of Justice was an unforgettable experience. And now? We’re heading to the Final Oral Rounds in Strasbourg to argue in the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights—an absolute dream.
This LLM goes beyond just acquiring knowledge and for me it’s about becoming a lawyer who can think critically, argue convincingly, and tackle real-world legal challenges. Through my modules, research, and mooting, I’ve developed sharp legal analysis, effortlessly breaking down complex cases and treaties. I’ve refined my advocacy skills, learned to stay adaptable under pressure, and gained expertise in strategic problem-solving. Most importantly, I’ve developed a global legal perspective, which is essential for working in international institutions.

Beyond the Classroom: Real-World Experience
At Birmingham Law School, the focus isn’t solely on academic study. It’s about preparing every student for a successful legal career. Through the CEPLER Reskill Scheme, I’m working as a Research Assistant to Dr Damian Gonzalez-Salzberg, gaining practical experience in human rights law. CEPLER also played a key role in supporting our moot journey, offering invaluable mentorship along the way.
The BLS Skills Academy has enhanced my advocacy, negotiation, and drafting abilities, while CAL AWAS has helped refine my legal writing. Networking events, guest lectures, and career mentoring have connected me with experts in international law, arbitration, and policy-making. These experiences have equipped me with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to drive real change in the legal world.
Where I’m Heading Next
My goal? To work with international organisations, government bodies, or legal institutions that drive policy change. Whether that’s through international arbitration, human rights litigation, or shaping global environmental policies, I want to be at the forefront of legal developments that matter.
This LLM has been more than just an academic pursuit—it’s been a transformative journey. It has equipped me with the confidence, skills, and experience to step into the next phase of my legal career with purpose and clarity. And with Strasbourg on the horizon, I know this is just the beginning of an even greater adventure.
