As a postgraduate, I use LinkedIn daily to stay updated on industry trends, connect with UoB alumni, and reach out to professionals for advice. Many UoB alumni feel a strong connection to current students from the same university, which makes them more open to networking. You can search for alumni by filtering by industry and reach out for a chat. Additionally, following companies that interest you allows you to stay informed about industry developments and potential job openings.
One effective way to build connections is by sending personalised connection requests. Instead of simply clicking ‘connect’, take the time to write a brief, thoughtful message explaining who you are and why you’re interested in their work. A friendly, professional approach can go a long way in fostering meaningful connections.
Attending Careers Network Events
Another excellent way to build your network is by participating in Careers Network events. The University offers a variety of events throughout the year designed to connect students with potential employers, alumni, and career mentors.
- Employer presentations and career fairs allow you to interact with companies actively recruiting postgraduates.
- Workshops and seminars focused on skills such as CV writing, job applications, and interview techniques.
- Networking evenings where you can meet alumni working in your field of interest, making it easier to establish direct contacts with potential mentors or employers.

For deeper, more personal guidance, the Careers Network Mentoring Scheme is an excellent resource. This scheme connects you with experienced mentors, alumni and professionals who have valuable career insights to offer. Being paired with a mentor provides you with one-on-one support as you navigate your career journey.
Mentors can help with everything from reviewing your CV and offering job-search tips, to providing advice on handling interviews or transitioning from academia to industry. In addition, having a mentor expands your network and can lead to long-term career connections.
