As the dissertation and exam seasons approach, the University of Birmingham becomes a hub
of intense focus and study. While the campus offers excellent facilities, sometimes a change
of scenery is just what you need to recharge. Here are some of the best cafés and restaurants
that I have experienced around Birmingham that provide perfect study breaks.

Hey Brew Espresso
Hey Brew Espresso is located conveniently close to the University on Bristol Road in Selly Oak,
making it an ideal spot for quick study breaks. This independent café is known for its
specialty coffee sourced from top roasters and a menu that includes delicious bagels, pastries,
and vegan options. Its cosy interiors, complete with houseplants and ample seating, create a
welcoming environment for students to relax or work on their laptops. The friendly staff and
vibrant atmosphere make it a standout choice for both solo study sessions and casual meetups
with friends.
The Exchange Café
Even though this café is located in the heart of Birmingham, The Exchange Café is nestled
within the historic Exchange building in Centenary Square. This café offers a unique blend of
grandeur and warmth, making it an ideal spot to escape the library’s confines. With
hand-roasted coffee from local supplier ‘Yorks’ and a menu of handmade salads and
sandwiches, it’s perfect for a mid-study break. The café’s impressive interiors and bustling
atmosphere provide a refreshing change from the usual study routine.
Yakinori Selly Oak
Yakinori, situated on Bristol Road in Selly Oak, is a vibrant Japanese restaurant that offers
students of the University of Birmingham a unique dining experience just minutes from
campus. This lively eatery specialises in authentic Japanese cuisine, blending traditional
dishes with modern flair, making it an excellent spot for a study break or a casual meal with
friends.
Kimchi Korean Restaurant
Located on Dawlish Road in Selly Oak, the Kimchi Korean Restaurant offers University of
Birmingham students a vibrant culinary escape from the usual study routine. This
family-owned eatery combines traditional Korean recipes with a warm, communal
atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for study breaks or group meals during busy exam
periods. The menu celebrates Korea’s rich culinary heritage, featuring sizzling BBQ platters,
comforting bibimbap, and crowd-pleasing dishes like honey-glazed fried chicken and
tempura prawns. With generous portions at accessible prices and a welcoming ambiance,
Kimchi provides a sense of community and comfort, making it a standout choice for students
seeking a taste of Korean hospitality close to campus.
Campus Options
Sometimes, leaving campus isn’t feasible. The University’s own cafés, such as the Atrium Café in the
Teaching and Learning Building and Fellows Coffee Shop in the library, provide convenient
and comfortable spaces to take a break. These spots are well-lit, secure, and offer quick bites
to fuel your study sessions.
When it comes to deadlines, these cafés and restaurants became more than study spots for
me. They were calm and energising places when life was getting tough. Whether savouring a
scone at The Exchange or people-watching at Kimchi, each visit reminded me that even in
the chaos of exams, this city has my back.
