MSc Immunology and Immunotherapy student Adithiyan tells us about his favourite places on our beautiful Edgbaston campus…

The University of Birmingham is full of hidden spots of beauty amidst its vast and majestic grounds. As a postgraduate student, I’m still amazed by how expansive and stunning the campus is. What struck me first and made me fall in love with the university was standing in front of the Aston Webb building. Turning back, I saw a world of lush greenery, red-brick architecture, and the magnificent clock tower, Old Joe, standing proudly at its centre. Alongside this beauty, the campus is alive with academia and an array of leisure activities that make it a truly vibrant place to be.

With the increasing pollution and traffic in the city, finding a breath of fresh air can be a challenge, but the University’s ‘breathing area’, just beyond the campus centre, offers a peaceful escape. It’s quiet and lined with lovely trees, making it the perfect spot to sit on one of the many benches and take in the clean air and soothing views. I often find myself returning here during breaks between classes or after finishing some reading in the library.

Speaking of the library, it’s impossible to miss! With its striking gold-coloured, shiny exterior and bustling atmosphere, it’s a central hub for students. Inside, the library is vast, offering a range of facilities to suit different study needs. There are common spaces where people can chat and snack freely, as well as silent study areas where the only sound you’ll hear is the rustling of pages. These spaces are bright, cosy, and ideal for focused studying.

Beyond the library, there’s a little-known gem I’d like to share. If you walk along the road leading downhill towards the University’s sports pitches, towards your right you’ll notice a small archway. Hidden behind it is a staircase that leads to a patio, offering a wonderful view of the pitches. It’s a lovely spot to enjoy the sunshine, the breeze, and the sight of flowers in bloom.

Another favourite place of mine is the enchanting Winterbourne House and Garden. Nestled in a leafy corner of Birmingham, it’s just a 15-minute walk from the campus. Featuring over 6,000 plant species and a historic house, Winterbourne is a haven of natural beauty and history. It also hosts workshops, outdoor theatre performances, and family-friendly events. The best part? Entry is free for UoB staff and students, just remember to bring your ID!

This, however, is only the beginning. The University of Birmingham’s campus is vast, steeped in history, and brimming with beauty. The best way to experience it all is by taking a leisurely walk perhaps with some music or good company to make the journey even more enjoyable.
