Having grown up in the Warwickshire area, Birmingham has always been just a half-hour train away. It is a city that offers a lot to people of all varieties, in terms of fantastic food, green spaces, a buzzing nightlife, and a range of different activities.
The best food
Birmingham boasts an incredible food scene, with options to suit every taste and budget. For those craving authentic and creative cuisine, Tiger Bites Pig on Church Street is a must-visit. Known for its incredible bao buns and bold Asian-inspired flavours, it’s a small but mighty spot that’s always buzzing. I would also highly recommend Digbeth Dining Club, a short walk from the city centre, it houses street food stalls and has a great couple of bars. Birmingham is also home to the famous Balti Triangle, where the British Balti first came into being. The cultural influence of this area can be seen all across Birmingham as it houses some of the best curry-houses in the nation.
Hub for live sports
Birmingham is a haven for sports enthusiasts, with opportunities to watch and participate in a variety of events. The city is home to Aston Villa and Birmingham City football clubs, drawing passionate crowds every match day. University of Birmingham students who also like cricket can head to Edgbaston Stadium, one of the UK’s most iconic cricket grounds, which frequently hosts international matches and thrilling T20 games, and is conveniently right on the university’s doorstep. With venues like the Utilita Arena and Alexander Stadium hosting everything from athletics to basketball, Birmingham’s vibrant sports culture is hard to beat. For students, it’s an exciting way to experience the city’s energy and camaraderie.
Shopper’s paradise
No discussion of Birmingham is complete without mentioning its shopping scene. The Bullring, with its iconic Selfridges building, has something for everyone. Nearby, the Jewellery Quarter offers unique, handcrafted treasures and a glimpse into the city’s industrial heritage. Whether you’re after a new wardrobe, a quirky gift, or just a spot to window-shop, Birmingham’s retail offerings are second to none.
Festive Christmas market
Although it’s finished now, the annual hosting of a Frankfurt Christmas Market in the centre of Birmingham brings tourists from across the UK to try the bratwurst and gluhwein. As one of the largest German Christmas markets outside of Germany, it’s the perfect place to pick up handcrafted gifts, indulge in seasonal treats, or simply soak up the cheerful atmosphere. The market is a beloved tradition that adds a touch of Christmas magic to the city every year.
Loads of green spaces
Despite having the appearance of a bustling city, Birmingham is home to an abundance of green spaces that offer a peaceful escape. Cannon Hill Park, just a stone’s throw from the University of Birmingham, is perfect for picnics, paddle boating, or a leisurely stroll. Sutton Park, one of Europe’s largest urban parks, offers sprawling woodlands and serene lakes. For a quieter retreat, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens provide a tranquil oasis filled with exotic plants and beautifully landscaped gardens. For University of Birmingham students, Winterbourne House has a fantastic garden that is free for students to come in and visit. These spaces are a testament to Birmingham’s commitment to blending urban living with natural beauty.
