The first term of my MSc Business Analytics at the University of Birmingham has been a voyage of growth and discovery. With the New Year approaching, it is now time to reflect on my experiences from this first term and set new resolutions to make the next term even more rewarding.

Highlights from First Semester

I am proud to share that I attained the highest marks in one of my courses among 156 students, which greatly boosted my confidence. In my first month here, I also managed to secure a part-time job as a Postgraduate Content Creator. This has been a blessing for me as I intended to be self-sufficient.

Beyond academics and work, I have found a home in a small yet close-knit group of friends from diverse cultural backgrounds. Sharing stories, learning about their traditions, and enjoying their cuisines have enriched my student experience immensely. One of the joyous moments was winning the Treasure Hunting competition organised by our Programme Director, Robert Fleming. This not only introduced me to my classmates but also motivated me to give my best in every aspect of the course.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

Travelling alone from Bangladesh for the first time was a big leap, and balancing my finances while pursuing higher studies was never easy. Moreover, the MSc course is highly intensive, with tight deadlines and a heavy workload, often disrupting my sleep schedule and leaving me racing against time to complete assignments.

Although these challenges made me more resilient and conscious about planning, they also highlighted areas I need to improve to perform well in my second term.

New Year’s Resolutions

As I step into the New Year, I am determined to bring several changes to my life that will not only enhance my academic performance but also improve my overall well-being. Here are my major resolutions:

  • Financial Management: Being a foodie, gastronomic explorations have been a frequent indulgence for me. While these have been slightly expensive, I now intend to prioritise saving – particularly for my accommodation fees – and manage my finances more wisely.
  • Academic Excellence: I aim to maintain distinctions or high merits across all my courses. To achieve this, I will adopt better study habits and make optimal use of the resources available at UoB.
  • Time Management: I resolve to complete all assignments at least two days in advance of their deadlines. This will help me avoid last-minute stress and allow sufficient time for thorough revisions.
  • Sleep Schedule Improvement: Rest is essential for productivity. I aim to establish a routine that balances academic commitments with leading a healthier lifestyle.
  • Personal Growth: I will continue to nurture friendships, learn about different cultures, and push myself out of my comfort zone. These experiences will make my journey meaningful and fulfilling.

Looking Ahead

The first semester has been a whirlwind of highs and lows, but each moment has shaped me for the better. I am optimistic that by staying true to my resolutions, the next term will be even more successful and enriching. Here’s to a year of growth, balance, and new adventures!
