A brief history of your career since leaving the University of Birmingham

I have worked at a number of schools. I then went into a specialist support service working with children with additional needs as a teacher of the deaf and became an area SENCO. I then pursued further degrees at the University of Birmingham including a BPhil in Deaf Education.

Skills and knowledge from your postgraduate degree have you used in your career so far

Many of the modules were practical and relevant to the job.

Main work activities in your current role

Supporting deaf children through their education, working with deaf babies and their parents. Planning, delivery and assessment.

Main challenges in your role

Juggling caseload - you need to be highly effective to meet needs of students. Keeping up to date with new technology e.g. hearing aids.

Why did this type of work appeal to you?

It is vocational - I have always wanted to work with children with additional needs and this provides job satisfaction.

Do your research, there are many opportunities for professional development, make the most of these.
