University and private accommodation advice

This Postgraduate Virtual Open Day is designed to inform current postgraduate offer holders about available postgraduate accommodation at the University of Birmingham.

The University of Birmingham Accommodation Services offer dedicated postgraduate accommodation in both the Pritchatts Park and Selly Oak villages, as well as a range of studios and apartments across a number of locations including the new development Host Student Apartments.

Not all students choose to live in University accommodation. Living, in conjunction with Guild Lettings (The Guild of Students own lettings service) can help you find quality accommodation in the private sector. We can offer advice on costs, contract matters and suitable locations. Guild Lettings do not charge any fees to students and only work with landlords accredited with the Midland Landlord Accreditation Scheme. We also host StudentPad, the University’s official property search engine to provide you with a list of properties available for rent.

Local areas surrounding the University include Selly Oak, Edgbaston, Harborne and Moseley. These are the main areas that students choose to live when moving to the private sector as they are close to the University of Birmingham and offer a wide range of attractive facilities for students. Su asked:

Hi! Which would be the best private accommodation (location and distance to Uni wise) for two international postgraduates going to medical school and engineering school?

Katie replied:

Hi Su

We would recommend looking at private accommodation in Selly Oak and Harborne.

Lisa asked:

Hello, In terms of finding a private house, which areas would you consider to avoid in Birmingham? I’m quite flexible why I wouldn’t mind going by bus/train/bike for appr. 30-45 mins a way, however, I don’t want to live in any rough areas either. Thanks

Katie replied:

Hi Lisa,

I can’t really comment on the different areas of Birmingham. However, for the University we would recommend either Selly Oak or Harborne because of their close proximity to university.

George asked:

Does the computer generate the rooms based on the number of the applications or based on the written start-date of the application? Thank you.

Katie replied:

Hi George,

We do not allocate on a first-come-first serve basis, the computer will randomly allocate each applicant a number to give everyone an equal chance of getting their preference.

Ahmad asked:

Hello team! May I ask What accommodation would you recommend for a postgraduate students looking for an en-suite quite self-catered in a single sex accommodation? Is there any single accommodation choices? Where can I have more details about the home-stay opportunities?

Ahmed replied:

Dear Ahmad,

You can request for single sex accommodation in your application for accommodation. Should you be inclined to en-suite, self catered accommodation, you can apply for the following options as a postgraduate student:

Jarratt Hall

Host-Student Apartments

We do also have a range of studio and single bedroom options available which you may also be interested in. For more information regarding postgraduate accommodation, please refer to our brochure and website.

We do not unfortunately offer the option for home-stay. If this is an option you are considering, we would advise making enquiries through Birmingham Studentpad (a platform in which we advertise private sector accommodation), in particular the message board, Guild Lettings (the University’s affiliated letting agent), and with accredited agents, details of which can be accessed through the MLAS website.

Kind regards
