The Birmingham postgraduate student experience

This Postgraduate Virtual Open Day is designed to inform current postgraduate offer holders about the Birmingham postgraduate student experience.

At Birmingham you will be part of a diverse community located in an inspirational campus setting, with the most vibrant, multicultural city in the UK on your doorstep. With independent restaurants, shops and bars throughout the centre and popular districts around the city, this new and vibrant Birmingham is nestled among local markets, iconic buildings of our industrial heritage and contemporary architecture such as the new Library of Birmingham.

The University of Birmingham Guild of Students is the students’ union for more than 34,000 students, – 14,000 (40%) of which are postgraduates. We are one of only a handful of unions in the country who offer a full time Postgraduate Officer, who makes sure that postgrads are represented, supported and provided for in their academic, welfare and social experience. The Guild is also here to help you develop skills outside of study, have fun, meet new people, represent you to the University and make sure you get the best from Birmingham!

The Postgraduate and Mature Students Association (PGMSA) is specifically aimed at postgraduate and mature students to discuss issues particular to you and offer support.

If you’re interested in sport, Birmingham is a great place to be. With support and facilities for over 50 team and individual sports, you’re bound to find a club to suit you. University of Birmingham Sport and Fitness is an iconic new club providing world-class opportunities for everyone in the region, from beginner to elite athlete.

Global Buddies is a Buddying Scheme that supports International Students, run by Guild Advice.

diane asked:

Thank you, Rose. I will follow the two links you have provided. Please have a wonderful afternoon !

Rose Bennett replied:

You too! I look forward to welcoming you in September 🙂

Kathryne asked:

where can we find our portal log in?

Cleo replied:

You should have received a letter in the post or an email with your Birmingham email and temporary password. If you have not received that, then I would get in touch with your admissions department who would be able to advise you.

diane asked:

Hello, Rose, when would the username and password have been sent to me by admissions ?

Rose Bennett replied:

Hi there, I wouldn’t be able to say exactly when as students get their offers at different times but it should be soon after, if you can’t find it then contact admissions through here

diane asked:

What are the best sources to guide me through the visa application process ? I hold a passport from the USA.

Rose Bennett replied:

Hi there, you’ll need to contact the International Students Advisory Service, you can find them here

diane asked:

I am a full-time PhD (research) beginning my program at Birmingham in September. How do I set up an account on my.bham ?

Rose Bennett replied:

Hi there, you’ll need to register on mybham with username and password that should have been emailed to you from admissions
